一年一年過得很快, 轉眼間, 我來到這世界已經 26 年了.. 我生日跟農曆新年恰好一致但我想跟一般日子沒啥特別, 日子還是一樣照樣要過ㄚ.. 我已經兩年不在雅加達過年了, 所以今年呢, 想趁我生日, 還有華人新年到處討紅包.. 哈哈.. 我也可能有點不好意思拿, 但如果人家已經準備送我呢, 總不好意思就把他拿下了, 只能說聲恭喜發財.. 本人已有工作但尚未結婚, 所以不可發紅包.. 呵呵..

今天應該是自我反省最佳時機, 由於天已晚, 不可晚睡, 明天 3 點早上我老媽要向啥神拜拜啥的.. 不好拒絕啊, 這傳統風俗習慣的東西, 雖然難以用理智見解, 但我身為孝, 不可違背世俗.. 所以只好不可多嘴, 不可多問.. 乖乖得聽我媽話為最. 明天我跟我姊夫家人出去吃大餐, 又吃好料, 唉.. 何時才能減肥啊... 除夕的今天我已經吃好多呢.. 撐死我了..

這周末本來想和台灣朋友們出去泛舟之旅, 不知情況如何, 看來大家又在忙他們自己的..所以好像這計畫該是泡湯了.. 好了啦... 我今日祝福就是要我讓我將來能：更加知識見聞，更加努力存錢，賺錢，並更進一步，爬上公司職位.. 還有.. 希望能快找到伴侶... :D

Spanning Tree Protocol Lab#1

These few days i've learned the nature, concept of cisco switches and redundancy (topologies). how to create trunk ports, access ports, vlans, VTP, CDP, and last but not least, STP; which i believe more widely known as Spanning Tree Protocol. its sole objective is to detect and prevent any potential loop in switch environment as redundancies added in into the picture and business started to grow beyond boundaries..

i've created 4 trunking switches, placed each on its own management VLAN all in .1 subnet, 1 default gateway as router, and cloud represent my MS Loopback adapter. i've tried forcing down the root bridge both by priority, or root primary option through the terminal global config mode.. the STP took place by blocking the R3's fast ethernet port 1/6 (fa1/6) when things are running in normal mode.. (i've opened a cmd window pinging from cloud to R4; through R1 as root bridge). and uh.. the simulation will took place at the root bridge, as i'm going to shut one of the port that connects R3 & R1 (fa1/4 to be exact). the traffic will be temporarily cut off, and fa1/6 will change its mode to LIS (listening), LRN (learning), and finally FWD (forwarding). well... what i've noticed is that the time gap between the consecutive pings on which it can reach up to 12-15 seconds.. and i presume it can made lots of things go haywire...

as things normalized (perform no shut command on the R1 fa1/4), the ICMP packets goes down / timeout again as normalized traffic flows through R1.. by knowing its limitation (and of course trying to appreciate it), i'll advance into a deeper study about PSTP, RSTP and portfast in the next few weeks...

牲醴祭拜之日.. 弭災、求福、報謝

昨天我凌晨四點起床,跟我爸媽去我已過世的爺爺奶奶家..離我家差不多十分鐘路程. 到了過後我就幫我父母準備, 擺些神前的供牲饌祭品, 點燃蠟燭, 獻茶, 酒等. 這些隆重祭拜和牲品是為了紀念老祖宗過世節日. 一共有九個人,再加上我已過世的爺爺奶奶. 拜拜是人類對宗教信仰實踐的行為表現，人類藉著拜拜的儀式行為與神靈交流，以祈求在生活中得到神靈的護祐，趨福避禍，獲得平安.

焚香了過後, 就擲杯筊請問神明的降臨, 神明既降, 對神明有所祈禱者，擲杯筊請問神明是否允許。雙手捧持金紙，拜供神明察納, 然後就焚燒金銀紙. 燒完了過後再次擲杯筊問神明是否用餐完畢, 持酒潑灑金銀紙，稱「奠酒」，以防紙灰飛散，然後撤收祭品.

收完了過後, 咱們就在廚房圓桌那裏吃早餐, 跟我堂兄弟姊們聊聊天, 然後就回家, 再次進行以上給我外公, 外婆... 這場傳統拜神的日子的確讓我懷念不已.. 從我小時候到現在還在進行, 以後輪到後代們來行禮了啦.. 希望不會逐漸消失..

等待

等待就是人生唯一無法避免之事。我現在就在等往章宜機場的第一輛巴士。也算情況啦，因為我本身怕趕不上飛機所以特別早起。我不知第一輛何時來，只知道它五點半從車站點開始出發所以沒辦法，要便宜就是要等。等了三十分左右果然來了。

我這次回去預備了些學習錄影，正在看 cbt nuggets 和 total training 兩公司的片子。本身覺得前者所講些話題較仔細易解。哇靠，六點了，我手機自動重開啊。但是還好我已按下儲存。終於到海關了，這邊超冷呢，肚子又餓沒吃早餐。回去第一件事就是吃 batagor!!! :D~

reinitializing user.mysql database table

i gotta admin this was the stupidest mistake i've ever done. i accidentally clicked on the empty on the user.mysql table.. which results in db can't be accessed whatsoever. i've tried the trick on reinstalling the mysql using yum remove, yum install, clean reboot, but still in vain.. finally i got the solution which is first to remove the files under /var/lib/mysql/mysql/user.* - consists of 3 (user.frm, user.myd, user.myi) - i've found this after frigging 30-40mins tinkering here and there... zz...

after shutting down the sql (/etc/init.d/mysqld stop), - ensure all process killed (ps -ef and kill necessary services). and uh.. i've decided to reinstall the DB by typing command (mysql_install_db), restarted the db (/etc/init.d/mysqld start), and voila.. by accessing the db (mysql -u root -p), it still prompted the password and it reflected as wrong password (it shocked me for a while but after i tried with only (mysql), it allows me to go inside already.. so, to enter the username & password for root:: (/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password ****) it's that simple.. took me almost 1hour to find out this solution.. well.. lessons well learned..

after which, the db tables were setup accordingly (script), and after altering the .xml file for the apache tomcat config to listen to my favorite port 1337, it's all complete. I've yet to explore inside the functions but it looks quite sophisticated.. hmm..

frustration - cloud.com installation

yesterday night i've spent quite amount of time troubleshoooting the source.list on why the server refuses to download although i've already cleared (aptitude clean) and (aptitude update) so many times.. i've modified the source.list (in the first place because root login wasn't enabled, i was forced to su root from bash and use nano to get in the KDM master config file (/etc/kde4/kdm/), nano kdmrc, search for AllowRootLogin = true. afterwhich, went to the /etc/apt/sources.list and modify the deb http://... but still in vain..

this morning when i woke up i tried again on a fedora machine, it looks like it can get the repo (cloud.repo) when i started issuing wget command.. but after which, the installation breaks because of incompatible version of Phyton 2.7.. the repo rpms requires phython(Abi) = 2.6, also, i'm running fedora core 14 x64 architecture, according to the one of the community forum has just posted it doesn't match.. recommend me to run FC13x64 instead.. : (

well.. easy solution would be just downloadin the core image which is 1.1GB.. the funny thing is, they (cloud.com) don't even create another way for user to download its image, other than http download.. (torrent download anyone..)

看完了那布 ''社交網絡'' 電影讓我覺得自己不成才.. 體內突然間發熱, 快要生病的感覺.. 腦海裡想一大堆計畫, 夢想.. 怪了自己, 怨恨了自己.. 到現在為何還不出人頭.. 唉.. 這幾天工作的事情讓我覺得越來越煩.. 開會完了過後總是沒有決定... 一直問同樣東西, 煩同樣東西, 講到半天也講不完.. 唉.. 累.. 每次上班似乎沒精神般.. 可今天呢, 還好點.. 昨天剛申請到了AS/400 系統用戶, 這幾天還好至少有東西玩.. 系統怎麼運行? 就靠我自己努力去學.... 家裡也剛裝了Solaris 11 (OpenSolaris 代替), 還有 Oracle 的數據庫.. 要嘗試下功能如何.. 正要學著怎麼還如何換 DB Listening Port.. 因為跟我 Zend 伺服好像有衝突..

Backend Password Reset - Prestashop (How To)

my short term memory must be failing.. i can't remember what i put last week on the admin password for the backend admin panel for prestashop.. i don't want to waste m time re-installin the whole web app and DB, so i thought i can tinker from DB table. i used phpmyadmin as my DB tool and hashcalc (freeware) to calculate MD5 hash value. steps for reference:

1. locate the directory "config" and open setting.inc.php in wordpad. look for the cookie, define(’COOKIE_KEY‘, ‘JpHI7Cy8KBWxKBRqy0FO9aVhDITwx0ULdFQInrDGN40auq4eY6LGsqvC’);
2. copy paste the highlighted and put in the hashcalc (download here http://www.slavasoft.com/hashcalc/index.htm) - i installed it on my VM, (precautionary trojan/virus, etc, but i think it's quite safe to install..)
3. put this + your password... example (see screenshot) the new password to be reset is admin12345 then put as: JpHI7Cy8KBWxKBRqy0FO9aVhDITwx0ULdFQInrDGN40auq4eY6LGsqvCadmin12345
4. click calculate, copy the md5 has value into the DB temployee table under password
5. the password is now reset to admin12345 for that particular account...

Enabling Ethernet @ Backtrack4R2

Due to the nature of a security suite OS, backtrack doesn't enable any ethernet interfaces open by default. The only interface that’s enabled is a loopback address.. so.. to enable the eth0 interface:

1. switch user root
2. password is defaulted as toor
3. /etc/init.d/networking start
4. Update-rc.d networking defaults

The DORA (discover, offer, receive, ack) will occurs and hopefully the router dhcp will automatically assign with default config e.g def.gateway and dns servers…if not, let’s assign it manually using:

Ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.100.102 netmask 255.255.255.0 up (assign ip)
Route add default gw 192.168.100.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 (assign def.gateway)
Route –n (confirm routing table exist)
Nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (go to /etc/resolv.conf and set the nameservers manually)
Nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

The applicability of recent development on webmatrix really astounded me.. although it's now still under beta development status but i can see this has greatly improves and rewrites how apps should be delivered to the customers.. since the CMS engine framework's already been installed; the deciding factor now lies on the design, customization and of course, the juice of its content!! :-D~~ After researching on many CMSes (BlogEngine.net, DotNetNuke, Gallery2, Kentico, ResourceBlender, SugarCRM, Umbraco, mojoPortal, etc), i think what impressed me the most is nopCommerce.. although some of the components, modules are proprietary, but i can say it's quite sophisticated enough for an opensource .NET application...

i'm really amazed on the growth speed of applications esp in this CMS field.. looks like many has yet to come and sometimes the further i look into a deeper understanding of a particular IT field, the more i felt that i don't really know much things honestly..

today i woke up quite early, not as usual 8AM, but instead i'm summoned to attend an important meeting with our big boss at town.. i really liked his way of thinking, although he's the big boss, he left the decisions on our hands, always questioning whether we're doing the right thing etc.. he made us think, think and think. that's what my previous lead Jean had often told me also... IMHO they're both quite a critical thinker.. at that point of time i felt like re-charged instantly, felt like i need to do sthings, really. however after quite a few hrs, its idea are being overwhelmed and winded down the road with our usual business tasks.. hopefully as time goes on, i'd become wiser..

i've had a request from my friend to setup a simple and manageable eCommerce website, and as i run through some of the best options, review and comments, i've decided to try it on my own. i've downloaded the stable version and tried out the backend config and run through one purchase cycle with approvals from backend. looks good and pretty much solid i can say. the default theme is just fine, i tried to apply a new theme but the modules messed up so i reverted back :D..

the site itself is supposed to help promote and sell goods from Brother's Land.. (tn.abang).. haha..

Windows patching has been a historical issue and constant annoyance for IT staff. manual updates were a huge paiin, and while the advent of the automatic update feature improved the situation, it brought with it problem of its own.. automatic updates are simply.. too automatic.. grabs no matter what type and applies them according to schedule on which it was already set ..

WSUS is one of the solution to consolidate updates on one server, distribute them out to clients, and apply only approved updates from approved categories at approved times. It also includes some useful, if somewhat lacking, reporting capabilities. However, all of this still isn’t enough for a high-uptime environment, and that’s where tiering comes in... it requires that servers to be tiered and in a very nice and clean GPO OU groups and policies.. on which in many organization environment, this is unfortunately not the case..

What's so Merry about Christmas?

Society has turned up to be as fictitious as i was observing many of my friends sent me Christmas greetings through many means.. cells, messenger, facebook etc.. many knows that i'm not a follower of christianity itself but idk.. many of non-followers alike has chosen to becomes a herald of the celebrations itself as to achieve the goal of peace and tolerance towards one another.. well., i replied their greetings as a show of respect but i don't usually invoke it in the first place..

I praise Christmas holidays don't get me wrong.. i cherish on the overall positive impacts on our economy... thrive spending, parties, celebrations, well.. it gave colors to life and made it more meaningful i guess.. as Y2010's ending soon, it's time for me to examine my budget for next year as well.. and reflect back, examines on the spendings i've gone through for the past years... AFAIK i've overspent 2k compared to last year.. T_T

I'm looking at the stars, they're so far away, and their lights takes so long to reach us... all we ever see of stars are their old photographs..

Router on a Stick (ROAS)

ROAS is the terminology for enable routing between two VLANs on a simple Layer 2 switch using a Cisco router with just one interface.. A cisco layer 2 switch (sw1) carries two VLANs (10 and 20) with 3hosts connected (the PC3 is not). PC1 belongs to network subnet 2.1, PC2 belongs to network subnet 3.1. by default if the switch is just a normal layer 2 switch, the hosts can't communicate betwen them because they belong to different VLANs and there's no routing. thus if i want to provide network connectivity between the 2 LANs, i need to have a layer 3 engine somewhere in the network.. so i use a router to provide layer 3 connectivity

For a given source vertex (node) in the graph, the algorithm finds the path with lowest cost (i.e. the shortest path) between that vertex and every other vertex. DDoS Attakk! - TCP Syn Flood

Today i've tried to perform an attack simulation to my local wamp server on which it dies within a few secs from this attack alone. The attack is known as SYN attack, which exploits the nature of TCP (its reliability) to send an SYN-ACK (Acknowledgement) to the TCP requestor. The requestor (client) in this case, has to reply to the server by sending an acknowledgement (ACK) to establish a connection succesfully. What happen is that the server will wait for the ACK from the client for quite sometime, on which causes the network to be congested..

these so called "half-open connections" also bind CPU resources and in this case flooding the server with SYN messages will utilize all the available reserved connections and thus, no new connections (legitimate or not) can be made, resulting in denial of service.. luckily my system didn't crash as i only tried for a few secs.. the left window is what was shown from the wamp server access log.. (see the spike on the upper right hand corner & CPU usage)

There's no complete solution to this DDoS yet, but some found ways to mitigate the issue; increasing bandwidth, CPU resources, equipping IDS, IPS, network filtering, etc..

Spiceworks. is a web interface kind of a network management system which allows me to monitor everything on my network.. this free thing can check active directory including a range of IP addresses that determines devices' status (on/off), it'll detect its server role and put in nicely in a summary called "inventory summary".. some of the ports that's being used to detect and scan machines are: 135 (WMI, used to detect windows comps), 22 (SSH, detect unix like comps and some network devices), 16992 (Intel AMT SOAP/HTTP), 9100 (Jet direct - for printers), 5060 (SIP ip phones), 80 (HTTP, detect servers, vmware, NAS, switches, hubs, etc (provided the port is enabled)). 161 (SNMP - detect network devices as well), 5800 (VNC HTTP).

another free network scanner tool that's popularised by contemporary movies are Nmap, it's being featured in many movies such as bourne trilogy (idk i think it's the 2nd movie), Matrix (1st), die hard 4.. etc... and on top of that, there's this Umit which is basically a front end tool that add some functionalities such as its GUI, comparison tool, network mapping/topology, and some sort of a filtering tools (sort by services, hostnames, ipv4 etc..) not bad eh?

EnterpriseDB & PostgreSQL Combo

Today i've installed another webserver listening at 8080 to test out the enterpriseDB & postgreSQL DB functionalities. installed a few apps, mediawiki & newly released phpbb3 (patience is a virtue edition). this is my first time usin postgreSQL as a DB, and what i can say compared to MySQL is ... ermm.. not too much different i think.. it's both RDBMS, both are opensource, and i think the center of the debate between these two open source databases revolves around three key issues: speed, data integrity, and popularity.

Speed

Many attest that MySQL is a much faster database than PostgreSQL, and hundreds of benchmarking websites and blogs further this notion. But as loads increase, PostgreSQL seems to win the race. PostgreSQL has made vast improvements in recent releases. MySQL still faster than PostgreSQL?

Data Integrity

Comparing the two on data integrity, we get PostgreSQL getting the overall nod. PostgreSQL has always maintained a strict adherence to the academic principles of "data integrity," placing it above all else in importance. MySQL on the other hand, started off with a more open attitude on the matter, instead focusing on easy acceptance, increased flexibility, and a high level of forgiveness for the average user.

OWA - Client Access Authentication Bug?

At first i intend to open up my forwarding port for both port 443 (SSL) & 80 (HTTP), however, after i tried accessing the direct IP to my exchange OWA, it popped up an authentication error which prohibits me to access to its default OWA site, it doesn't even show the form based logon (error 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied), so i go to the client access to see further on the config. it appears that the setting was fine, and i tried many options and it showed up the login page, however after i put in username and password, the apps prompted an error:

Outlook Web App didn't initialize. If the problem continues, please contact your helpdesk. Copy error details to clipboard Show details Request Url: https://192.168.100.201:443/owa/auth/error.aspx User host address: 192.168.100.201 OWA version: 14.0.639.2.

after i examine further the error message in eventvwr, i do realise that something wrong in the IIS web.config file. it showed up that the web.config (C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V14\ClientAccess\owa\web.config) on line 29 indicates that the auth logon mode is still on "Forms" instead of "Windows" so the resolution was quite simple, just replace the entire:

authentication mode="Windows"
and change it to
authentication mode="Forms"

Now i can use any PC browser to point directly to my PC's IP address and i'll be able to check my mail online. in this case it's: https://58.182.229.54/owa/

OWA, Powershell & EMC

This weekend's focus is on Ms Exchange training vids.. administering exchange 2010 so far has been a pleasant one.. there's so much for everyone basically, for GUI lovers; EMC, for CLI lovers; PowerShell. if i'm full time doing exchange prolly i'll start being manual, clicking here and there, searching for clues and whatnots. 久而久之, i'll get used to it and start to create a script in powershell to automate some redundant and repetitive tasks such as creating a list of new users, defining their roles, changing parameters in each fields, querying datas and reports, etc..

無法偵測到新裝的內存?

昨天一回到家我就直接把新的內風扇給裝了. 主要目的是要把裡面的熱空氣抽出往外流, 然後用了PRIME95 軟件測試溫度結果不到五分鐘, 處理器溫度升到將近攝氏100度, 太恐怖了.. 裝跟沒裝沒什麼兩樣.. 我上網搜索發現大家都怎裝的, 我自己感覺有點不對襟, 便試一下把風扇給倒裝了 (氣流從外往內). ㄟ.. 用同樣的軟件來試, 十分鐘過了, 溫度於攝氏75度左右不再上升啦..我好開心.. 就把螺絲關緊..

另外,我也附加了4G 內存. 原本是4G, 所以總共 8G. 注意事項如下:

1. 一定要裝 64Bit 系統, 確保內存正確安裝＿.

2. 裝完了過後進BIOS, 確認 memory remap 功能設為 enable.

3. run>msconfig>boot tab>advanced options: 確認 max memory 勾選框沒有打勾.

這樣就應該能把新附加的內存檢測出來.

今天剛好放假所以特地跟我大學同學約中午午餐時間相聚，接下來就陪我朋友去森林廣場買東西。好久沒去哪裡咯，待會兒就看一下RAM多少價錢了。我想把主機剩下的兩個空格放滿不剩。最近我跑2xWin2K8也有點兒慢些。偶也想到要買內風扇不知能否找到合理價格，因為我記得這種配備通常較少人去強，導致少部分商家隨意開價。

這幾天工作方面沒啥忙，大事已過，今年重要測試任務已完全搞一個段落，所以用上了班時間溫故而知新。真有興趣。哦對！我兩禮拜過後會加入個工作新環境呢，又從零開始，我當然有點怕怕，有點擔心不適我欲。唉！現在難講，等我做滿一個月回頭判斷吧! : )

i came into a bump when i tried to install exchange 2010 client access server role installation on Windows 2008 R2.. saying that its one of the pre-requisite that i need to change the startup mode for Net TCP Port Sharing service from manual to automatic otherwise i'll be seeing this error during Rediness Check, which prevents me to proceed with the installation: “The start mode for the Net. TCP Port Sharing service must be set to Automatic before Setup can continue.”

To successfully pass the readiness check just type this on your powershell v2:

set-service nettcpportsharing -startuptype automatic

I've spent my weekend installing Sharepoint 2010 and its based DB SQL 2008.. overall installation experience was quite straightforward and easy.. now the only limitation was the RAM size (allocated 2GB only).. which requires 8GB according to their minimal req.. that explain the slowness during apps load up.. hmm.. i was thinking whether i should buy another DDR3 and beef up the remaining 2 slots on my MOBO...

what i can say about cisco's config professional is just.. purely awesome.. i love to tinker with command lines and stuff but still, i need to tinker down the GUI mode JIC.. well nuff said, it's just incredible, and everything's a dummy mode.. even the security audit function is provided and gaps are identified and rectified within a few clicks away.. that's just.. a less headache for network engineers out there i guess...

Ermm..well.. the ms loopback adapter works as it should, providing me with a dummy adapter (indicated as a cloud in GNS3) connecting to my router (R1) interface fa1/0... few steps to configure the router from BNIB till connectivity established, assuming the installation on cisco config professional & loopback adapter has been completed: there ya go.. (for my documentation purposes only)

Troubleshootin!

i've spent at least 2-3 hrs troubleshootin the php_extension that won't load up... that particular extension is the connection enablers between PHP & MySQL.. i tried to check on the phpinfo(), it showed up that the extensions are indeed being loaded, and i've commented out both the extension=mysql.so & extension=mysqli.so.. i've tried to put a definitive path to its extension folder instead (inside the php_extension folder) but with no success.. i've restarted the webservices and all few times, when i started up it prompted me that no mysql extensions were loaded.. and these are indicated as .dll.. on which i dropped my jaw and pondering.. why is these 2 dlls required in the framework in the first place? it's a unix like machine and it shouldn't prompted me missing .dll errors right.. well.. my best assumption is that particular php file doesn't really sophisticated in terms of the exception handling..

well.. i guess i'll put aside this case and see what's the progress..

Lots of attention i put on last long weekend to observe one particular stock, TLKM. it dropped appx 6-9% from its current price, bringing the value same as June 2010's level.. so i think it's a brilliant opportunity to make pocket money out of this so i've decided to buy 5 lots of it.. now let's sit tight and watch these stocks grow.

Zend Framework @ CentOS 5.5

Installation guide is quite straightforward, however after finished installing Zend Server on CentOS with default SELinux enabled, Apache refuses to start: (refer to screenshot). one method to get webserver start is to disable the SElinux.. but it's kinda risky isn't it?

stop all daemons by running:

Why do i need to install VMware tools in the first place? well.. These tools enables and increase our virtual machine’s performance and capabilities. Prior installing, few things to consider:

To install kernel header files and a C compiler by typing "yum install gcc gcc-c++ kernel-devel"
to ensure that the running kernel "uname-r" matches the kernel headers "rpm -q kernel-devel" if the 2 versions are not the same, type "yum -y upgrade kernel kernel-develreboot"
extract the tools, go to the directory and install "./vmware-install.pl"

This week i've been readin tutorials pertaining to CompTIA Network Plus as well as further tinkers on the Virtual network configuration for my both ubuntu & kubuntu (server ed). I've also tried to use MacOS X (Leopard), and till now trying to figure out how to install vmware tools inside so that at least the screen resolution can be made bigger and sound can come out...

today i jog 5km plus in the morning and it feels great.. although the weather has a little bit of rain pouring.. i've downloaded this apps called micoach, and it does serve the purpose as a method of tracking the speed, time, GPS location etc... i was wondering what will be reflected on the map if i decided to run at stadium.. :/

I gotta admit that doin this took me quite a fair bit of my leisure time to understand the initial setup.. once the learning curve's been conquered, the rest is just a matter of split secs..

I went to Apple store yest and found out that there's no adobe flash player embedded in their safari.. how ridiculous is that.. Jobs' claimed that it consumes lots of CPU resources hence cuttin short the battery lifespan but hey.. at least a solution for this? : /

My experience as a programmer has taught me a few things about writing software. Here are some things that people might find surprising about writing code:

A programmer spends about 10-20% of his time writing code, and most programmers write about 10-12 lines of code per day that goes into the final product, regardless of their skill level. Good programmers spend much of the other 90% thinking, researching, and experimenting to find the best design. Bad programmers spend much of that 90% debugging code by randomly making changes and seeing if they work.

A good programmer is ten times more productive than an average programmer. A great programmer is 20-100 times more productive than the average. This is not an exaggeration – studies since the 1960′s have consistently shown this. A bad programmer is not just unproductive – he will not only not get any work done, but create a lot of work and headaches for others to fix.
Great programmers spend little of their time writing code – at least code that ends up in the final product. Programmers who spend much of their time writing code are too lazy, too ignorant, or too arrogant to find existing solutions to old problems. Great programmers are masters at recognizing and reusing common patterns. Good programmers are not afraid to refactor (rewrite) their code constantly to reach the ideal design. Bad programmers write code which lacks conceptual integrity, non-redundancy, hierarchy, and patterns, and so is very difficult to refactor. It’s easier to throw away bad code and start over than to change it.
Software obeys the laws of entropy, like everything else. Continuous change leads to software rot, which erodes the conceptual integrity of the original design. Software rot is unavoidable, but programmers who fail to take conceptual integrity into consideration create software that rots so so fast that it becomes worthless before it is even completed. Entropic failure of conceptual integrity is probably the most common reason for software project failure. (The second most common reason is delivering something other than what the customer wanted.) Software rot slows down progress exponentially, so many projects face exploding timelines and budgets before they are killed.
A 2004 study found that most software projects (51%) will fail in a critical aspect, and 15% will fail totally. This is an improvement since 1994, when 31% failed.
Although most software is made by teams, it is not a democratic activity. Usually, just one person is responsible for the design, and the rest of the team fills in the details.
Programming is hard work. It’s an intense mental activity. Good programmers think about their work 24/7. They write their most important code in the shower and in their dreams. Because the most important work is done away from a keyboard, software projects cannot be accelerated by spending more time in the office or adding more people to a project.

馬六甲一遊

這週末的馬六甲一遊讓我全身疲憊不堪。。在太陽普照之下，滿身大汗中巡遊,逛街,找著東西好吃的, 古董建築物等; 左右翼旁都貼滿吉利對聯詞句, 春聯還留著在牆上依稀可見幾個字壽山福海等吉祥詞句。也發現許多會館立足於此地呢.. 歷史記載, 黑白照片到處可見, 還有晚上時, 小路轉換成很熱鬧的夜市, 賣各種各樣類似於台灣小吃和物品, 算不錯啦.. 這就所謂觀光勝地啊。ㄟ回到飯店時我感覺好奇怪，怎麼多年來的歷史, 城市裡成長發達速度並沒有那麼快.. 附近似乎沒可見什麼高樓大廈..

這上面照片呢, 是我和我大學朋友們的合照.. 背景是一艘船似的博物院, 裡面在講馬六甲的興衰; 文明和戰爭.. 我真有興趣讀上面寫得東西, 由於時間不足, 所以逼不得已離開..

到了那兒咱們就吃著名的雞粒飯, 飲料我點椰子來喝.. 味道不錯啦, 但總是比不上碧山賣的白斬雞飯... 晚上呢, 咱們就吃加必多沙嗲.. 排得X馬的長, 等候多時才輪到咱們吃.. 味道很一般, 價錢還OK.. 唉.. 印尼路邊賣的沙嗲最好吃了啦..

中學課本經常提到的馬六甲我至少去過了啦.. 依我看來, 真比我想像中還有趣, 這地方果然名不虛傳..

ATI cards seem to interpret 1920x1080 HDMI as a TV mode and set an underscan of 15% by default.
I have connected up my HD3200 to both a 1920x1080 TV via HDMI and a 1280x1024 LCD via DVI and this only happens on the TV.
For some reason they hide this setting away as well.
In Windows you need to go to the ATI Catalyst Control Center and select the Desktops & Displays section.
Then use the dropdown menu from the triangle on the small screen icon at the bottom.
Select Configure, then the Scaling Options tab.

My attempt to install vcenter server to manage overall hypervisor was not a successful one.. i didnt read the hardware requirements in the first place and i've just figured it out after the error message popped up... soo.. i did some search on the hardware compatibility list and it says that only Xeon based server processor is supported.. unable to tinker further on the various features on Vs made me sad :'(

ESXi Trial

My first trial with ESXi was a successful one... i've managed to establish both connection to its hypervisor using GUI (vSphere client 4.1), as well as through CLI secureCRT, haven't tried the web interface though... it's kinda funny, i put its hypervisor on top of vm workstation, reminding me of Inception the movie.. dream within a dream!!! :D~ well.. nvm i still have time to tinker later and looking forward to experience the power of various Vs.. this is only a glance of seeing a true rapid deployment, data centre virtualisation & consolidation.. IMHO, quoting from inception's train riddle, i see virtualisation IS the train.. and i know where i hope this train will take me!! and i'm hella sure! and it DOES matter! this IS the future.. this IS what i'm going to pursue and HELL... i'd be prepare for it..

Wow.. after hours of troubleshootin on the adapter & cisco router setting finally i've managed to establish connectivity from both routers as well as my router to vm.. it's quite an achievement i'd say :D thanks to GNS3 and its hypervisor, dynamips for giving ppl chance to do a hands on experience on cisco IOS...

Next step will be quite slow.. i need to finish my vSphere & ccna trainin modules.. with lots of workload going on my shoulder; curiosity shall prevail..

Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System (TACACS) is a remote authentication protocol that is used to communicate with an authentication server commonly used in UNIX networks. TACACS allows a remote access server to communicate with an authentication server in order to determine if the user has access to the network. TACACS is defined in RFC 1492, and uses (either TCP or UDP) port 49 by default. A later version of TACACS introduced by Cisco in 1990 was called Extended TACACS (XTACACS). The TACACS protocol was developed by and is proprietary of Cisco Systems.

TACACS allows a client to accept a username and password and send a query to a TACACS authentication server, sometimes called a TACACS daemon or simply TACACSD. This server was normally a program running on a host. The host would determine whether to accept or deny the request and send a response back. The TIP (routing node accepting dial-up line connections, which the user would normally want to log in into) would then allow access or not, based upon the response. In this way, the process of making the decision is "opened up" and the algorithms and data used to make the decision are under the complete control of whoever is running the TACACS daemon.

TACACS+ and RADIUS have generally replaced TACACS and XTACACS in more recently built or updated networks. TACACS+ is an entirely new protocol and not compatible with TACACS or XTACACS. TACACS+ uses the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and RADIUS uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP). Some administrators recommend using TACACS+ because TCP is seen as a more reliable protocol. I've installed GNS3 and its CISCO emulator dynamips on my virtual machine and have also tried to download its IOS from undisclosed source. i've tried to access, understand more about networking and its various devices and often used command as well as to firm up my knowledge on the basic internetworking concept.. i'm plannin to join the CCNA exam perhaps sometime towards the end of this year.. hopefully the company will support to pay the exam fee as a part of employee training / development purpose...

Well.. life's been much more exciting here in Bandung, Indonesia.. although i don't have the privilege to hands on tinkering with their blade & vsphere, they at least gave me a glance through what is what.. and as i sat down, they'll answer my questions in a very much pleasure tone.. and the more i know.. i realized that my learning path is still faaaaaaar far away and this perhaps was just the beginning...

and at least i need to start somewhere...

Last week i made my mom angry for staying at my friend's house.. she was worried and and mad as i told her that i've spoken to her earlier last week.. but in fact she forbid me to stay at my friend's house without any acceptable reason.. well.. i'm a grown up man don't i? i very much requires reason on WHY she doesn't want me to stay @ my friend's house.. looks like she doesn't have any reason why.. and i don't quite like her attitude on being such a naggy mom.. i didn't spoke to her since.. well.. sighs.. i understand that she's totally care for my well being but hey.. tellin me to go shower early, sleep @ 10pm, etc isn't the care i want..

在萬隆已經差不多快要三個禮拜了，該做的也不會比我那時想像中那麼直接，那麼簡單了，路途看來還遙遠。這兩個月主要任務必以加速來處理啊！事不可怠慢，要不然做不完。一定要盡力而為！

哦對前三天我與同事們出去吃燒烤，看廚師們處理食物時有些不妥當，我多多少少也會挑剔些，擔心我肚子能不能接受，但同事知道我心不安卻撫慰著說一切都很正常.. 我心底已知道答案，只好微笑著繼續吃。。不出所料！回到了辦公室，再過3－4小時我肚子突然件間有所不適，漲起來的感覺但是沒有想要上廁所，我就立刻去對面藥房買便秘藥。爬了五樓，傳話給我對面同事，他就好心地給我兩粒去毒葯，吃完了過五分鐘後感覺嘔吐已快要了就繼續上頂樓廁所。。回飯店整晚吐出一共有八次，吐沾到了我黑莓時還好沒完全死掉。。還好還好。全午餐燒烤該不剩啦！那天晚上吃啥就吐啥，喝啥就吐啥。。整條咽喉到現在還痛得很，連吞嚥，深呼吸也有些不便。。唉。。

隔天早上我逼我自己要上班，同事們一個個很熱心的問好點否。。我就差點爾滴著眼淚並深深地感激同事們有些關心啊。。同事之間感情也越來越濃厚，之后肯定有些使不得。。雖然在此地只呆了短短兩個月，但我自己也很希望將來當兩岸溝通方面之橋樑。。

1. A lot of companies confuse high availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR), or implement a DR solution when they really need HA. Put simply, HA is about preventing the everyday failures that cause downtime (network card failure, storage corruption), while DR solutions are designed to help you recover from true disasters (floods, hurricanes), not minor problems.

2. Implementing disaster recovery software or speaking broadly about “what-ifs” is not enough. The IT team must be well versed in a set plan that has been tested and proven effective. IT staff, as well as upper-level management, should be trained in the DR protocols in the case of any business disruption. In the event of a disaster, team members should already be familiar with the plan and not rely on in-the-moment decision making.

3. While testing the plan may not mean that it will go off without a hitch, it is an important step in preparing the company for a disaster. After testing, improvements should be made and the plan should be scrutinized for any possible holes.

4. Disasters affect the entire business, not just your IT infrastructure. Representatives from all company departments should be involved in the planning process and should know their role in the event of a disaster. In addition, it is imperative to train company executives and decision makers in how to carry out the plan. They should be aware of all protocols, and be involved in testing exercises.

5. Many technologies actually introduce complexity into the IT environment. For example, clustering technologies may require administrators to painstakingly maintain each server in the cluster to support successful failover. IT organizations instead should find and embrace those technologies that reduce complexity for operational staff — thereby eliminating potential sources of human error.

6. While it is tough to justify shelling out the extra dough for a top-of-the-line server, it is well worth it on the day that your processor fails. Many IT staffs are working with constrained budgets and therefore have to buy lower-priced equipment. This equipment is more likely to see failures, increasing the likeliness of future problems.

7. For example, dual-ported network cards share common hardware logic, and a single card failure can disable both ports. For full redundancy, you need either two separate adapters or a built-in network port combined with a separate network adapter.

8. Many factors can cause site-wide failures, including an air conditioning failure or leaking roof, a power failure, or a major hurricane. Site disruptions can last anywhere from a few hours to days or even weeks. There are two methods for replicating data across sites. One method is to tightly couple redundant servers across high speed/low latency links, to provide zero data-loss and zero downtime. The other method is to loosely couple redundant servers over medium speed/higher latency/greater distance lines. This provides a disaster recovery capability where a remote server can be restarted with a copy of the application database missing only the last few updates. In the latter case, asynchronous data replication maintains a backup copy of the database.

9. DR/HA is not one-size-fits-all. Every business has different objectives for different applications. It’s ok to look to others for guidance, but stay focused on your specific goals.

10. What exactly is it that you need to accomplish? Implementing wrong or incomplete solutions can waste time and money. Know what clients and users need and adjust the DR plan based on the service levels that need to be met.

My Altair was corrupted because of the inappropriate handling of the virtual machine's HDD.. at first my host machine can't detect the presence but luckily i have downloaded seatools, the tool itself enables me to quickly identify the healthiness state of the HDD itself.. apparently the vmhdd creates some bad sector so i quickly deleted it all and now i'm forced to create another clean clone for the win server 2008...

What Mattered and What Did Not Matter

The following, however, is a theory, a theory that is supported by much of the program´s core themes, and one that this writer believes to be true.

It is very likely that Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, Lost´s creators, knew that a large proportion of Lost viewers would react negatively to the show´s ending, because they made it so purposefully. If one looks at the recurring theme of the last few episodes- "It doesn´t matter". The only thing that mattered really was love, and so, fans knew what they really had to know and no more. Michael revealing the function of the island to Hurley was absolutely necessary to understand the show. The rest; the four-toed statue, the polar bear, Dharma etcetera doesn´t matter, it is irrelevant. Viewers don´t need to know it as it just does not matter. It can be interpreted that it is a metaphor for modern society. The metaphor being that the human race is so preoccupied, so wrapped up in what are ultimately trivial and futile pursuits: the products of materialism, commercialism, even capitalism, that human beings don´t see what is all around, everywhere. After all, the underlying theme of the entire series became clear in the final season, the theme of love, pure, incorruptible love. This theory is supported by the continual references throughout the show to philosphy and philosophers. John Locke, Desmond David Hume, Rousseau and Jeremy Bentham to name but a few, who were some of the most prominent philosophers in the post-enlightenment era, of who many wrote of the need to embrace love and knowledge and shun the artificial temptation of materialism.

And now this metaphor has seemingly come true with regard to the reaction to the program´s ending from many of its fans. For the writers of the show, this could be the analogy that they were conveying through Lost. "Losties", the show´s creators may argue, are annoyed and upset because this is what the human race is like in this current type of society. Obsessed with these areas of life and things that are ultimately worthless and that are not necessary to achieve happiness, that human beings do not need to nor should care about. And this mindset is a product of the environment in which human beings are brought up in, a society built on capitalism and its many offshoots. At least, that is, according to Lost.

When Lost fans consider these points it can be very possible to then view the ending in a different way, and dependent on religious or spiritual beliefs, for many, it could have perhaps been a perfect ending.

This article focuses on the discipline involved in using a technical approach to trading the stockmarket, but the rules shown below could easily be modified and in some cases equally applied to any approach and any type of trading.

What sets many of the world’s great traders apart from the crowd is their ability to have a single-minded approach to making money which at its most basic means being disciplined. These guys have shown it is possible to make money in many different markets including stocks, indices, foreign exchange and commodities. What is more they are able to adapt to different background conditions, and for CFD traders this aspect is crucial.

The search for the frustrating holy grail

Many technical traders are constantly searching for the holy grail of systems, and there are clearly some approaches that work better than others, though very few approaches work all the time in all markets.

What is more important is to have a basic set of rules which cover the emotional aspect of the trading process. One might start with three basic rules of trading: going with the trend, limiting risk by using stops, and careful money management. Not following these simple rules alone condemns many intelligent people to the trading dustbin.

There are of course many times though when things start to go wrong, and during these moments it is human nature to question the underlying methodology or trading system, or tweak the entry/exit points to try and try to ‘fix’ the problem, or even to abandon the existing system and start again.

Many traders become so frightened of losing again that they will then miss out on some of the best trades that occur purely as a result of the law of averages. They may begin to choose the trades that feel good to them, rather than treating every trade as a production line of potential winners.

On that basis, it is useful to look at a simple list of additional rules which will help you sleep at night as a CFD trader and take away some of the emotional damage that can be caused by stressful conditions in the markets.

Rule 1: Don’t make your system too complicated

Modern trading software often has hundreds of built-in technical analysis indicators, plus any combination of custom strategies and expert analyses which can be baffling in their complexity. One technique that you favour might indicate a buy signal, whereas another says sell, and a third indicator might not be conclusive or suggest perhaps adding to positions.

The key is to find a simple methodology that generally works bearing in mind that no one indicator works all the time. Try and keep it simple and stick to a strategy that you feel comfortable with.

Don’t use a trend based approach when a share or index is in a trading range (which for many stocks is the majority of the time. Likewise, it is suicidal to use oscillators in trending markets – not only do they give poor signals, but you may miss the main thrust of a brand new move.

If in doubt, find the strongest stocks in the market by measuring the slope of their performance or how they are faring against the benchmark index. Then simply look to go with the trend, and vice versa when shorting stocks.

Rule 2: Always buy strength and sell weakness

As a shorter term trader you don’t have to act like Warren Buffet with the luxury of being able to wait ten years before value shows itself for your stock. If you are using margin, which is normally the case for CFD trading, you want results.

The point to bear in mind based on going with the trend is that the public continues to buy when prices have fallen, whereas the professional buys because prices have rallied.

This difference may not appear logical, but buying strength works if you are trading. The rule of survival is not to "buy low, sell high", but to "buy high and sell higher". If you are comparing various stocks within a group, buy only the strongest and sell the weakest.

This works on the downside, too – don’t be frightened to sell and sell again until there is a trend change. Regular CFD traders know that stocks that are bid for are almost invariably already strong before any announcement. Those that issue profit warnings are usually already in a downtrend.

Rule 3: Every trade should be the same

You just never know when you might hit the jackpot in this business, but you should take the view that every trade should have the potential to be the biggest trade of the year. It might be, it might not be, but if you are following a disciplined strategy the whole point is to take every signal. Don’t be disheartened if your favourite trade doesn’t do what you hoped – there are plenty more every day to choose from.

Rule 4: Patience is a virtue

This may be the greatest trait of a successful trader. Once you have the set up to enter a trade, allow it time to develop and give it time to create the profits you expected. Taking small profits is the surest way to ultimate loss, as these are never allowed to develop into enormous profits.

The real money in trading is made from the one, two or three big trades that occur every so often. If the thought of losing a profit is toying with you, you might want to take some money off the table and let the rest of the position run using a trend indicator. Alternatively, simply set a realistic target that is much higher than your allowed stop loss. If your trading system is valid, you should make decent long term gains.

Rule 5: Take your losses

Small and quick losses are the best losses, however annoying they may be. It is not the money that is important, but the mental capital that is used up when you are preoccupied by a losing trade that is obscuring other opportunities.

You should expect occasional drawdowns as part of any valid trading system, but you must take them and move on. Many of the best trading systems have around a 40% success rate of winners, but the winners tend to achieve much higher returns than the losing trades.

Rule 6: Forget the urge to ‘get your money back’

If you do have a series of sharp losses, which happens to every trader at some stage, take some time off. Close all your trades and stop trading for several days, or go on holiday. The mind can play games with itself following losses and the urge "to get the money back" is extreme, and should be dismissed.

If you can master these simple rules, you are already far ahead of the majority of traders. By the law of averages, and given that this is essentially a ‘zero sum’ game, you have every opportunity to make steady profits and of course enjoy trading – it’s not supposed to be a stressful business, but humans have a tendency to make it one. You just need discipline.

Configure Windows SharePoint Services Search Service Settings

I've made a wrong plan for installing sharepoint on my DC box.. it requires a local service account for search & indexing function in both the content and database level.. : (

By default, the search service is disabled in WSS 3.0. In order to enable it, goto your SharePoint Central Administration page and under the Operations tab, goto the "Services on the Server" list and click on WSS Search.

Service Account - You cannot use any built in accounts when specifiying the Service Account, however you can use local accounts. One account you can choose to use is the default Administrator account on your server, "myserver\Administrator".
Content Access Account - Use an account that has full read access to your SharePoint Content Databases. As a security precaution, try not to use an account that has write permissions on the database. For example: "mydomain\sqlserveruser".
Search Database - In most cases the default settings will work, change them as required.
Indexing Schedule - No new files will be searchable until they are indexed, depending on the load you wish to put on the server you can set this to be done as often as you want.

Upon submitting the form, the search service should start and begin indexing the content in your SharePoint site. Now would be a good time to install the Adobe IFilter to allow your search service be able to index PDF files, the earlier you install it the better, since it will only recognize PDF files added after the addon was installed.

If you haven’t downloaded the Web Platform Installer yet I’d recommend taking a look at it. Last saturday's BCP observation yet again some people mentioning about the mapping of shared folder / printer issue.. apparently they all keep repeating the same observation to the users.. if i'm the user i'll reply this back to IT and told them to work out some automation for me... actually it can be done using a logon scripts.. it's a useful tools for configuring desktop environments for users.. such scripts can be used for include mapping network drives, connecting to shared printers, gathering system information, synchronizing system clocks, and so on. In fact, just about anything can do from the command-line can be done using a logon script..

Logon scripts have been around for a while and most administrators of Windows-based networks have had occasion to use them. On Windows NT domain-based networks things were simple: if a user needed to have his environment configured using a logon script, the administrator would first write a logon script using the batch programming language, which has been around since the days of MS-DOS. Once written, this script was saved using a .bat extension to make it executable, but to make it work for a particular user the script needed to be found in the NETLOGON share of the domain controller to which the user’s account was authenticated. In Windows NT this NETLOGON share corresponded to the %systemroot%\system32\repl\import\scripts folder, and by placing the script in this folder on the PDC it was automatically replicated to all BDC’s in the domain. Once this was done, the administrator only had to add the name of the script to the Logon Script Name field on the User Environment Profile dialog box using User Manager for Domains.

Dear Quicken, i really really admires your multicurrency support and i'm pretty amazed by the robustness of your application so far.. i tried GNUCash, MS Money, MINT and whatelse, but i still put you on my no.1 personal cash management software list.. i've been using your software since late 2007, and it really helps me alot in terms of planning & managing my overall cash, bank accts & bills.. thanks for the reminders, auto schedule and the powerful analytical tools that you've provided, and i'd be even more grateful if you could implement an enhancement or put a little more effort on the multi currency support.. (converting pre existing bank account into another base currency)... and i pray hard and hope Sgpore local banks will also be incorporated in your list for easy transaction download, more or less like paypal one click update function...

Some people might get an approval from bosses and bypass regulations that's being imposed in the first place.. it's kinda really made people working on the ground hectic in one sense.. that's at least one of the feedback from my colleague when i asked.. "why things is so much complicated and it seemed that no rules/regulations at all in the first place?", he answered; well.. lately there's been too much "exception handling" approved by the bosses.. so this particular application's setup is really messed up..

btw i've just configured the keywords setting in adwords so that it appears on top of the google search whenever targeted users keyed in the predefined keywords.. it costs at least Rp.450,- for the ads to be able to showed up, and so far there're 3 clicks which costs me Rp.1350,-... judging from the impression it made so far (ard 600 impressions in a mere 8hours), i think this adwords thingy is kinda worth the money..
